Phoenix/Expulsion/Release is an invitation to people who have experienced trauma to sit with their experience in a safe, familiar setting. The subjects are asked to write down three things on a sheet of paper:
First, details about a formative event in their lives that made them feel as if their power was taken from them and diminished afterward.
Second, what negative thing this event turned them into in their self-perception as a result of this event.
Third, the name or names of the people who were involved in causing this event. All of these details remain fully private only to them.
Once the subjects finish writing, the paper is balled up and set in a bowl. As they take hold of a pig's heart (the closest approximation to a human heart), they set their papers aflame and their portrait is taken.
All ashes are collected in a large bottle. It remains to be seen how many portraits will need to be taken in order to fill the bottle.
